ECONOMIC of EAST BELITUNG DECREASE IN THE LAST 5 YEARS

October 9, 2017 | Other Activities

No doubt that until the year 2017, the world economy can not be said to be stable. Low economic growth in a number of developed countries triggered lower demand for commodities that led to weakening commodity prices to be one of the factors that led to the weakness of the economy in various countries.
Not with the exception of Indonesia, also affected by the weakening of world commodity markets. This is because Indonesia relies on export trade of superior commodities as economic support as reflected by the figure of Gross Regional Domestic Product (GDP). There is a decline in Indonesia's economic growth from 2012 (6.03 percent) to 2016 (5.02 percent).
Various areas of Indonesian commodity export producers also feel the instability of global trading activities, one of which is East Belitung Regency. The East Belitung economy has been driven by the mining and quarrying sectors of production and is driven by exports in terms of expenditure. Belitung Timur is one of the regencies in the province of Bangka Belitung Islands that has contributed to the export volume of pepper and tin ore commodities at the national level. Not surprisingly, the weakness in the price of a number of leading export commodities such as pepper and rubber, and the decline of tin production has triggered a slowdown in economic growth in this "Laskar Pelangi Country". It should be underlined, the slowdown in economic growth that does not mean the economy in Belitung Timur does not grow. Figures for the economy continue to grow, only slowing down from year to year. In fact, a positive economic growth is able to indicate the economic performance of the region. Therefore, this growth slowdown indicates that there is an economic slowdown in East Belitung. Based on the graph, it is clear that economic growth in East Belitung in the period 2012-2016 shows a declining trend. This almost resembles the pattern of economic growth in the Province of Bangka Belitung Islands which also tends to decline. However, in 2016 the province of Bangka Belitung Islands showed a slight increase in economic growth while East Belitung has not shown any increase in economic growth. Nevertheless, East Belitung's economic growth in 2016 (4.19 percent) is still above the economic growth of the Bangka Belitung Islands Province (4.11 percent). Fresh winds come from domestic producers, PT Timah Tbk, which says there is a target to increase production and sales volumes. This optimism is based on the strengthening of tin price trend since 2016 ago. In addition, it is expected that there will be a surge in demand from the world market for this tin commodity because previously had experienced production restrictions in the framework of environmental rescue mission.
